Dr. James P. Adams, Jr.

Retired Dean & Professor

Dr. Adams is Dean Emeritus and retired Dorothy A. Miller Professor of Social Work. He serves on the board of directors for the National Issues Forums Network (NIFN) and participates in various advisory councils. Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors and awards, including Outstanding Young Men of America (1975), Community Leaders of America (1980), and Northport Citizen of the Year (2006). He remains active in both community and professional organizations. He is a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa in April 1994, Phi Alpha Honor Society in September 2006, and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Delta Tau Boulé, in 2011. His areas of expertise include aging, Black family structure and functioning, economic development and community revitalization, family caregiving and social support networks, and diversity management. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles including Dean and Professor at the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky and the School of Social Work at the University of Alabama. He has also served in various administrative and teaching positions at multiple universities and gained professional experience at the Tufts Delta Health Center in Mississippi.
